When asked how she copes with being a working mother, January told People magazine: ”I have a great doula who makes sure I’m eating well, with vitamins and teas, and with placenta capsulation. ”Your placenta gets dehydrated and made into vitamins. It’s something I was very hesitant about, but we’re the only mammals who don’t ingest our own placentas. It’s not witch-crafty or anything! I suggest it to all moms!”

”I think I went back to set six or seven weeks after, so he was really little. I had the baby and the baby nurse in their own room so I could go back and feed him every two hours. If I felt like he needed me, or if he needed to eat, or even if I just needed a squeeze because I was having separation issues, I would go back and see him. It was such a blessing that I wasn’t separated from him.”

“I think, creatively, Matthew just wanted to f–k with people, basically, and have them wonder where Betty is because there was so much going on about how we were going to shoot it because I was pregnant when we first started the show this season,” she said.

NBC Chicago has a great interview with January discussing Betty, Jon Hamm and the show. I’m uploading more “Mad Men” goodies today so come on back soon!

After a few seasons of playing “Mad Men’s” increasingly frosty Betty Draper Francis, is January Jones is hinting at a possible thaw coming for Season Five?

As she returns to the role of the ever-dissatisfied ‘60s housewife, Jones tells PopcornBiz about finding a different side to Betty, leaning on Jon Hamm behind the scenes and how she feels about those constrictive undergarments of the era at the end of each season.

What was really exciting about where you got to take Betty this time around?

It just continues to be challenging to me, that Matt Weiner writes, at least for Betty…she feels almost like a completely different person from season to season. He knows I like a challenge, and so I think he writes her a little bit different. I mean, she’s ever evolving, sometimes badly, sometimes negatively and sometimes positively, but that just continued for me – but it was in a different direction so I could sink my teeth into something a little bit different than you’ve seen.

Is each season a little bit of a history lesson for you? Do you learn something each time out about the era?

Yeah, definitely. I think that a lot of it just goes over my head, though – a lot of the historical references or the things that we address in the time period. If I don’t ask about it, I don’t ever even realize what they’re talking about half of the time.

When we last saw Betty Francis (formerly Mrs. Don Draper) on Mad Men, she had just impulsively fired her long-time housekeeper, severed ties with her emotional peer (a 10-year-old neighbor named Glen), learned about her ex-husband’s impromptu engagement, and moved out of the Draper marital home. Played by January Jones, the oft-misunderstood mother will pick up her struggle for happiness, and assortment of strained familial relationships, on Sunday, when AMC airs the premiere of season five. We spoke with Jones by phone earlier this week, and heard about her unexpected reaction to last season’s finale, where she would like to see Betty go in a spin-off, and—most important—why she wants to crash your theme party on Sunday night. Related:’s interview with John Hamm.

Julie Miller: Do you miss Betty during Mad Men hiatuses or do you need a break from her?

January Jones: I don’t miss Betty, but I do miss the cast members and the group of people that we work with. It’s really nice to see everyone and be in that community.

Betty ended last season on a few especially miserable notes. When you read the scene in which Betty fires her housekeeper, Carla, did you understand her motivation?

I understood it. I don’t want to say that it was justified, but she was having jealousy issues with [Betty’s daughter] Sally over the Glen character. Betty thought that she had a special emotional bond with Glen. Whether Betty could address it to herself or not, I don’t know, but seeing Sally with Glen made her have a physical reaction. She had told Carla that he wasn’t allowed in the home alone with Sally, and Carla let it happen. Therefore, Carla got fired. I think that really upset a lot of people. But to Betty, that was entirely justifiable.

The Daily Beast has two little interview snippets with January, which she recorded Tuesday before the TimesTalks panel. In the first one, she talks about her first acting gig in a “Jack In the Box” commercial and the second she talks about how the pilot of “Mad Men” only had a very small Betty part but she was such a fan of the script that she took a leap of faith and went for it.

January was also interviewed by Hollywood and spoke about Betty’s evolution and her relationship with Sally.

Jones admits, “I find myself defending her in the last couple of seasons, I think before, people didn’t feel that way.” But as to why people turned on Betty so quickly, Jones is at a slight loss. In Season Four, Jones says “Betty found her voice and tried to be a little more independent,” adding, “I don’t understand why a modern generation would side more with the implosive character of the first two seasons and not the one that’s trying to evolve.”

Jones notes in particular, Betty’s relationship with her daughter Sally, saying it’s “almost competitive” and that “they’re almost like sisters instead of mother and daughter”—an aspect that can only get worse as Sally approaches her teen years. “[Betty’s] emotional maturity level is hard to understand—she doesn’t deal with certain situations very well.”
